The Handmade Process

Our rug making process integrates modern design, luxurious materials and centuries old weaving techniques to express the contemporary vision of our rugs.

Every Meinecke Collection rug is hand crafted with the Tibetan-knot or hand-tufted technique. We use only the world’s finest virgin wools and silks. Pure wool is natural, renewable, durable and non allergenic, and is unrivaled as a material for fine rugs. Pure silk, and wool/silk blends, add luxurious softness and sheen to many of our designs.

We value our decades long relationship with our partner mills in Nepal, Thailand and Mexico. Their experienced artisans and weavers are dedicated to bringing the rich traditions of handmade craft to every rug. Their remarkable artistry is a part of every Meinecke Collection rug.

Tibetan Hand-knotted Rugs

Our Tibetan-knotted rugs bridge centuries of rug making art. The rugs are hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Kathmandu, Nepal who reflect a long and proud tradition of weaving born in the high country of the Himalayas. Made to order, and hand-knotted at either 100- or 150-knots per inch, each is an heirloom quality rug that will last for generations.

We use pure virgin Tibetan Highland wool to make our rugs. It is hand-sheared, and hand-washed in pure mountain streams; the wool is unbleached, preserving its natural lanolin and character. The wool is then carded, spun, dyed in small lots, and knotted into individual rugs — all entirely by hand as it has been done for centuries. The lanolin rich wool accepts dye in varying degrees, producing subtle variations of color that are the hallmark of rugs made with Tibetan wool. The result is that each rug is unique — with its own luster, coloration and feel — a work of art unlike any other.

Hand-tufted Rugs

Our hand-tufted rugs are made of 100% pure New Zealand wool and Thai silk. We work in close collaboration with master tufters in our partner mills in Thailand and Mexico, ensuring that each design is successfully rendered in the hand tufting process. Lines and forms, colors and gradations, are all faithfully reproduced with great precision and craft.

The pure white color of New Zealand wool makes it the perfect medium to capture bold and nuanced color dyes, ensuring beautiful color fidelity from design to rug. Its smooth and soft “hand” allows us to blend variations in pile, cut and loop, giving unique texture and subtle depth to any design. Each rug is hand edged and backed for an expert finish.
